When God Opts In:
Eastertide 2024
The story of Easter is the story of a God who does not opt out of the human experience but rather is always moving closer, again and again. God does not use God’s power and privilege to take a different path but instead God puts Godself on our path, becoming not only the good Samaritan who stops to tend the wounds of the man who was beaten and robbed, but the one in the ditch dependent on a neighbor to stop and tend to those wounds.
God does not opt out. Neither should we.
With our intersectional identities, impacted by socio-economic status, language, sexuality, education, or ability, many of us carry within us the ability to opt out of the experience and life of many of our neighbors. But the thing is, we really can’t opt out of the life of our neighbors; to do that we have to opt out of our own life too…even if we don’t know it.
In this season,we will begin wondering as a community whose path do we need to purposefully put ourselves on. We will begin to ask how we can assure that our lived reality actually matches the reality of the community around us.
How do we, like God, move closer to the lives of our neighbors?
