The Kin-dom is Theirs
Pentecost 2024

In the Christian tradition, the day of Pentecost is traditionally recognized as the birth of the church. The story we retell on that day provides us with a moment of looking at a community finding greater unity together than they thought possible. Gustavo Gutierrez describes this moment as embodying the idea that “There is no theology that does not have its own accent in speaking about God.” In our Eastertide season, we considered what it looks like to move closer to our neighbors on purpose, following the model of a God who opts into our experience. This includes acknowledging the theological accents of others.

In this new season, we are invited into listening to a particular accent – the voice of the children and youth of our community.

In response to his disciples (who were teenagers themselves!) asking who among them would be the greatest, Jesus said that to catch a glimpse of the kin-dom of God, we must return to being childlike, “simple and elemental” (MSG).

When we are children, everything is new, and we experience so much for the first time. What we take for granted when we are young is much different than what we take for granted as adults. There is wonder to be found around every corner. So, in this season, you are invited to lean into being childlike, whether you are a child, a middle schooler, a non-parent adult, or the parent of parents. We will practice being childlike together in our response and grounding times, and we will listen to the sacred wisdom of our youth’s stories told in parallel to the sacred stories of our ancestors.
