Stepping into Wilderness: Sacred Practices that Ground Us
In the lectionary, this season starts us appropriately with the gospel story of Jesus being led into the wilderness, by the Spirit, out into the wilderness to fast and pray and to be tempted by Satan. The Creator, the Spirit, the Child — all meet here, in this wilderness place, where forces of Empire would call into question the ministry, identity, and belovedness of Jesus.
Like Jesus, many of our most formative moments are experienced in the wilderness — we are shaped there. It is important for us to pass through these wilderness places, they grow us, strengthen us, draw us closer to ourselves and to the divine…but we do not go alone. We go with community, and we go with practices that ground us in our belovedness, in our sacredness, and in the belovedness.
Last season, we explored rhythms of rest and wintering, and how those things help us make space for new life by tending to the roots beneath the soil. In this season, we will explore what that wintering might have made space for as we explore the spiritual practice of attention, of attuning to something inside of yourself or around you with intentionality and regularity. We will have space to co-create the practices that might make that attention possible for you and what a practice of creative awe, wonder, and resilience may unstick for you in this moment.
And, of course, in the spirit of the season, what you may need to put down or pick up for that attention to grow and thrive.
