Hope + Horror
Eastertide 2026
Eastertide is marked by its liminal nature, that bubbling sense of something is coming and something is changing, right now we are here — in the aftermath of violence and betrayal and then, two days later, hope, disbelief, and now the regular company of their friend and teacher who had been very effectively murdered by the State. It’s a hopeful story, but it’s also one marked by horror. In this season, we wonder together what it means to be a community that is grounded in the story of the Resurrection. It’s a story of Hope and resiliency against the forces of Empire, but it is also a story of what it means to be a community that has experienced trauma, violence, loss, and betrayal together; a community that bears the truth of the story: Empire does not get the last laugh, but it does leave a mark that the disciples no doubt are carrying, even after the victorious story of resurrection.
Framed in those sparse post-resurrection stories, we will be exploring what it means to show up to and for our community (even in our more disgusting, post-death, post-rebirth, gooey moments) and name and hold all the ways we are holding both hope and horror together.
